Department of Special Services

Special education and related services are provided to those who meet eligibility criteria in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Part B. As mandated by federal regulation, a pre-referral procedure documenting the use of intervention in the regular classroom setting is first required. If the child continues to experience difficulty, a comprehensive evaluation may be indicated to determine whether or not he/she is eligible for special education and related services. The comprehensive evaluation consists of gathering and analyzing a variety of data including teacher records, observations, and special testing. If a child is determined to be eligible for services, a variety of programming options must be considered. The child’s Individual Education Program (IEP) team, based on individual student needs, makes programming decisions.
